Smarter Homes – and New Homes for Bats!

Several local G&DHA houses have recently received a comprehensive makeover that's benefiting both residents and local wildlife. The properties, which had failing timber cladding, have been transformed with new insulation and beautiful larch wood exteriors. But during the renovation work, the team discovered something special – evidence of bats using the buildings as their home.
Rather than simply continuing with the work, G&DHA took the responsible approach and commissioned special bat surveys to understand exactly which species were present and how they were using the buildings. Based on these findings, the team worked with wildlife experts to provide dedicated new bat homes, ensuring these important local creatures continue to have safe places to roost while the houses undergo their transformation.
The improvements haven't stopped at wildlife conservation. All the properties have been repainted and fitted with new fascias and guttering, giving them a fresh, smart appearance that enhances the local streetscape. More importantly for residents, the addition of proper insulation means these homes will be significantly warmer and more comfortable this winter, while also reducing energy costs – a welcome relief during these times of rising energy bills.
This project perfectly demonstrates G&DHA's commitment to responsible housing management that benefits both the community and the environment. By taking the time to properly survey for wildlife and provide alternative homes for bats, while simultaneously improving the energy efficiency and appearance of the properties, G&DHA continues its long tradition of being a thoughtful neighbour in Grayshott. It's exactly this kind of careful, community-minded approach that has made the housing association a trusted part of village life for nearly 90 years.
